99% of the organic oils we sell are Soil Association Certified Organic Food Grade*. This will be indicated on the product description on this site.

*Please note that essential oils are highly concentrated and therefore should be used with care and knowledge when being used internally.

Always get a trained professional to advise on safe internal use.

By choosing organic agriculture you are supporting the environment and your own health.

Certification Of Organic Essential Oils
It is important to establish that your oils have been certified organic, as this certification process is a good safeguard against many of the unscrupulous practices that go on in this industry. There are many good certification bodies to choose from both in the UK and world-wide, one of the best and well-known being ECOCERT International. In the UK the Soil Association is one of the better known bodies. NHR only sources certified organic oils where possible, over 95% of our range is certified organic, there are a few oils that are impossible to certify as they only grow wild or in farmed conditions. In these cases we always source from wild grown or untreated sources, and label accordingly, meaning no pesticides or chemical fertilizers have been used.

*NHR only use certified Organic ingredients in all of their products.

* Food grade essential oils. 100% of NHR organic essential oils and organic vegetable oils are also food grade certified as well as organic certified making them the highest quality grade possible that one can buy.

* NO ingredients or products are tested on animals.

* NHR do not use emulsifiers, colouring or artificial fragrances, synthetic additives or GMO's, or in fact anything that is not certified Organic and natural.

* NHR do not use any preservatives in their products. 99% of other Organic and natural manufacturers use preservatives which allow a longer shelf life - a more convenient factor when bulk bottling - but at what cost to your body? NHR are not prepared to compromise in any way with the purity of our Organic range. Hence, NHR bottle by hand in small batches to keep everything fresh for when you place your order. The shelf life may be shorter (6 months minimum up to 2 years) but you are using the purest certified Organic products you can buy in the world.

So, what are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts, obtained through expression or steam distillation of flowers, bark, leaves, fruits and roots. The easiest essential oil to see, is the pure essential oil that comes out of orange peel when you squeeze. Try it. Orange peel contains large quantities of oil, making it one the cheapest oils to buy. In contrast to Rose petals, which have very little oil in them, making it the most expensive oil. Most Rose Absolute oil you buy is not pure and is usually mixed with man-made chemicals creating a therapeutically useless - and in some cases toxic - oil. Essential oils are highly concentrated and must be diluted with carrier oil before applying to the skin.

What are Absolute Oils?

The delicate nature of many flowers, which make oils like Rose and Jasmine, means that the heat from steam distillation can damage the oil if not extracted very carefully. So a solvent is used to extract what is termed an absolute, thereby capturing the fragrance without the risk of damaging the fragile flowers or aroma. Absolutes cannot be certified Organic as they have minute traces of solvent in them, but the absolutes we sell do come from Organic flowers. For that reason we also sell Organic steam distilled Rose oil and Organic Neroli oil, one of the very few companies in the world to do so. They are produced from a very special steam distillation process keeping heat exposure down to a minimum creating a wonderfully fresh and pure aroma.

How do I Use Essential Oils?

Baths: Add 5-10 drops to base oil, milk or honey, and stir into your bath.

Massage: Add 10-15 drops of essential oil to 20ml of base oil (or 40-70 drops to 100ml).

Steam inhalation: Place 3-6 drops of NHR's "Breathe-Easy" oil - or an essential oil of your choice - into a bowl of boiling water, cover your head over the bowl and breathe in the steam.

Room burners: Put 3-6 drops of essential oils in some water in the bowl of the burner.

Skin and hair care: Add essential oils to your creams, lotions and shampoos to enhance their therapeutic actions. Mix 10-20 drops of essential oil to 100ml of shampoo, creams or lotions.

For Babies and Children: When using with children, always dilute essential oils in a good quality base oil 5 first. Use a lower dilution for children: 5-10 drops (for babies 2-4 drops) of essential oil per 20ml of base oil.

Storage Instructions and Shelf Life

Essential oils can be kept for approximately 1-2 years, if stored in a cool, dark area (keep your oil contained in the protective tin, to prevent exposure to light). Exceptions are the citrus oils, which need to be kept in the fridge, especially in warm weather.

The therapeutic information on each oil is for educational use ONLY, and is uk-aromessence / NHR Organic Oils Ltd's
opinion based on traditional uses and as such is not intended to be used to diagnose, prescribe or administer in any manner to any physical ailments. In any matter relating to health, please always contact a qualified health practitioner. These oils are not a replacement for orthodox medicine.

  • Although these essential oils are food grade certified, never take essential oils internally without professional advice and guidance. Do not swallow them. If they are accidentally swallowed, drink plenty of milk and consult your doctor.

  • The following oils may discolour the skin if it is exposed to strong sunlight: Bergamot, Juniper, Lemon and Orange.

  • Children and babies - Do not use Lemongrass, Thyme, Peppermint or Eucalyptus on children under three years of age. Keep essential oils out of reach of children.

  • When bathing babies and young children never use essential oils undiluted because the oils can easily get into their eyes if they rub them with their hands.

  • Pregnancy - If you are pregnant, only use essential oils in consultation with a qualified aromatherapist.

  • Always ensure that you dilute the oils to the correct ratio in a suitable carrier oil.
